"Search and rescue Canarias"
International SO event

This event has finished

On 25th July 2026, the Spanish Special Operations Department invites pilots to take part in a Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise over the waters south of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands.

The scenario: a Spanish vessel located roughly 50 NM southwest of Gran Canaria has issued a distress call over Channel 16, reporting that a lightning strike has knocked out most of its electronic equipment. Its emergency locator transmitter is not working correctly, and several crew members require urgent medical attention.

Participating pilots will fly helicopters and turboprop aircraft suited for SAR and Medevac operations, departing from and returning to Gran Canaria - Gando Air Base (GCLP). Once in the search area, each aircraft will be coordinated by an Aircraft Coordinator (ACO) and assigned to a specific search sub-area and pattern, following established international search and rescue techniques.

The main objective of the mission is to locate the missing vessel, relay its accurate position to the coordination team, and carry out the evacuation of the injured crew members back to Gran Canaria.
