"High Mountain Landing Exercise 2024"
International SO event

This event has finished

This upcoming event is set to depart from Aigen Air Base (LOXA) and is heading towards the western part of Austria, where the pilots will execute off-field landings in high mountain terrain. Afterwards the pilots will make its return to Aigen Air Base.

This scenario is based on the High Mountain Training Course hosted by the Austrian Air Force twice a year in real-life.

During this training course, the pilots are practising take-offs and landings at high altitudes. The performance parameters of the helicopters significantly differ from those during flights in lowland areas. Additionally, mountainous regions are characterised by specific meteorological conditions, such as foehn winds, downdrafts, and rapidly changing weather phenomena – pilots need to be familiar with these conditions. The courses also serve to familiarise pilots with the terrain, explore existing obstacles like ropes, high-voltage lines, or ski lifts, and navigate and land at prepared landing sites (e.g., near huts).

This is also part of the training of each Austrian military helicopter pilot, we want to give international SO-pilots the opportunity to get to know these procedures.
